THE Ashanti Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) James Sarfo Peprah, has expressed concern about the indiscriminate use of siren by some drivers of the Ghana National Fire Service and ambulance operators. He explained that some of the drivers resorted to the use of sirens to get a way through traffic jams, and thus disturbed public peace. DSP Peprah said these drivers abused the privileges offered them by driving recklessly through some principal streets in the Kumasi metropolis, especially during the rush hours, while sounding their sirens even when they were not attending to any official businesses. He added that some drivers, especially taxi drivers and trotro drivers’ mates also made unnecessary noise by shouting or tooting their horns continuously to attract the attention of the public or passengers, which is also an offence. Quoting sections of the Road Traffic Law to buttress his point, DSP Sarfo Peprah said “Every motor vehicle shall be fitted with an efficient electronic horn or with a bulb horn, which gives out a single note when the bulb is pressed, and no person shall fix on a motor vehicle any form of warning appliance other than a type approved by the commissioner’. With reference to the Act, he warned drivers, especially commercial drivers, to desist from blowing their horns indiscriminately. He added that security vehicles of banks were not supposed to use sirens to manoeuvre their way through vehicular traffic, adding that private security cars should also desist from the practice. He said the police would intensify its activities to arrest and prosecute all road traffic offenders to bring sanity to the Kumasi metropolis, and the country for that matter.
