Some major political parties in the country are calling for some electoral reforms in preparation towards the 2012 elections. The People’s National Convention (PNC) for instance wants the electoral commission to use a biometric registration system to prevent double registration and voting. It also says the voters register is bloated and wants the EC to re-register all voters.General Secretary of the PNC Bernard Monah told Joy News the reforms are necessary to protect the credibility of the 2012 elections. He said in 2008, the Electoral Commission itself admitted the current voters’ register was bloated and that that admission necessitates the compilation of new credible voters’ register if the sanctity of the country’s elections is to be protected.“We have called on the Electoral Commission to look at this matter with the seriousness that it deserves. We are also aware that the Electoral Commission has indeed set out to investigate whether ROPAL (Representation of the People’s Amendment Law) can be implemented or not,” he added.
The NPP supports the reforms being advocated by the PNC.Party Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey however told Joy News they are not happy the EC has ruled out the application of an electronic voting system for the 2012 elections. He said the NPP will be looking out for a “proper biometric register, verifiable with a central data base…because this is a major step forward towards ensuring that nobody can register twice.”“We will like to see some clean up of the actual method of voting so that we don’t get so many spoilt ballots,” he added.Source: Joy News/Ghana
