Two convicts being taken to prison following their conviction for a criminal offence by a court at Abura Dunkwa in the Central Region are reported to have attacked the police escort.
The two, Denis Adu Adjei and Sellas Kofi Boakye, were arrested on Sunday and charged with stealing.
They are said to have allegedly attacked Lance Corporal Salifu Amadu of Nyankomase Ahenkro Police Station who was escorting them to the Ankaful Prisons aboard a commercial vehicle.
The District Police Commander, ASP Bernard Twum told Joy News they normally have these confrontations because they lack the necessary logistics, such as handcuffs and vehicles, to do their work efficiently.
He confirmed that the police officer boarded a passenger vehicle with the alleged convicts because the station has no vehicle to convey them to and from court.
The policeman “had blood from the nostrils and the mouth”, he noted.
“While [returning to the cells] these boys attacked him. In fact it was a serious issue and [they assaulted him] mercilessly but with the help of the [other] passengers they were arrested.”
He said the policeman has since been treated and discharged from hospital.
However, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Corporal Raymond Asaba told Joy News the blame should not be put solely on the lack of logistics, explaining that the competence of the personnel must also be taken into consideration.
“Measures have been put in place to build the capacity of policemen so that they would be able to act tactically, how to handle criminals...”
He added that the case would be investigated.
