A management professor at the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has called for comprehensive reforms in the selection and appointment of board members and CEOs of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in Ghana.
Professor Albert Puni, delivering his inaugural lecture at the UPSA auditorium on Friday, spoke on the theme “State-Owned Enterprise Governance: Towards a Sustainable Board Appointment and Nomination Process for Sustainable National Development.”

He advocated for a transparent, merit-based, and sustainable process in appointing SOE leaders, stressing that good governance is essential for long-term national growth.
As part of his lecture, Prof. Puni proposed the 3C Model — a strategic framework built around Company, Customers, and Competitors — to guide leadership selection and business strategy.

The model, also known as the strategic triangle, helps institutions align their internal capabilities with customer needs and the competitive landscape to ensure sustainable advantage.
Prof. Puni emphasised that adopting merit-based and skills-driven appointments in SOEs will strengthen governance structures and enhance their contribution to Ghana’s development.

The lecture was attended by top academics, including the Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, and other members of the university community.
Prof. Puni, who currently serves as the founding Dean of the Distance Learning School at UPSA, has previously held key leadership roles such as Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Dean of the Graduate School.

His areas of specialisation include Corporate Governance, Leadership, Business Ethics, and Entrepreneurship.
At the end of the event, the university presented a giant portrait to Prof. Puni in recognition of his academic excellence and contribution to UPSA’s growth.
