Former President Rawlings has publicly cautioned President Mills that he will succeed only if he avoids the company of sycophants motivated by parochial interest.
Former President Rawlings said although the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government means well for Ghanaians, the advice of sycophants within the Mills administration can derail the party from attaining its mandate.
Mr. Rawlings was addressing a durbar of Chiefs and people at Aflao in the Volta Region at the 42nd Godigbe Festival.
“If we tend to put up sycophantic behavior and always say the party is straight for personal favours, we are bringing doom to our people,” ex-president Rawlings said.
Mr. Rawlings received a lot of condemnation recently, after he openly criticized the Mills government of being too slow in prosecuting its change agenda and delivering justice.
Mr. Rawlings however said there is no need hiding behind closed doors to discuss matters.
“When we have matters on our chests, we need not hide behind closed doors, we make that clear. I do not have any desire to usurp the presidency as many…tend to say in the media,” Mr Rawlings added.
Former President Rawlings also warned party members to desist from acts which can ruin the credibility of the ongoing polling station and constituency elections across the country.
“The NDC was built on the principle of fairness and equality,” he told the gathering of eminent chiefs and people.
Mr. Rawlings was rewarded by the Chiefs and people of the area for his contribution to development in Ghana.
Other personalities who were rewarded included Lieutenant Colonel Charles Agbenaza, Professor Ernest Dumor and Corporate Affairs Manager of MTN, Mawuena Dumor.
