Sand winning along the beach of Cape Coast is gradually threatening the landscape of the area.
The OLA and Brofoyedur beaches are areas that such activities are being carried out despite complaints from the public.
A visit by The Ghanaian Times to these areas showed sand winners using various sacks to load sand from the beach and carrying them away.
Some residents who spoke to The Ghanaian Times newspaper expressed worry about the situation and appealed to the authorities to address the situation before any disaster occurs.
When contacted, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, Anthony Egyir Aikins, said the assembly had warned all those engaged in sand winning at the beaches to stop with immediate effect.
He mentioned the lack of enforcement of bye-laws as the main challenge facing the assembly, but added that “everything is being done to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement.”
Mr Aikins said the issue was extensive1y discussed at the last Regional Security Council meeting upon which a committee was set up to deal with the issue.
The committee, he said, had submitted its report, which he explained also supported the total ban on sand winning at the beach.
Mr. Aikins said the assembly would liaise with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to acquire a suitable site for sand winning.
He urged the people to comply with the ban since they would be prosecuted when arrested.
