The Member of Parliament for Binduri is slamming government over what he says is the government’s decision to build only 15 CHPS compounds in four regions.
Robert Baba Kuganab-lem insists the 15 being contemplated by the government is woefully inadequate.
Speaking on the Scorecard, a Joy FM programme to assess the performance of the government’s two-year administration, the MP said it is not even enough to build 15 CHPS compounds in one region, let alone in four.
The government had stated in its 2016 manifesto it will “strengthen the flagship Community Health Planning Services (CHPS) programme in the areas of community participation, infrastructure and financing, quality service delivery by skilled health staff, supervision and monitoring, and surveillance and disease control.”
However, in the recent budget read by the Finance Minister the government intends to build 15 of the CHPS compounds.
Addressing the matter, the Binduri MP said that was unacceptable.
“In this year’s budget, the government promised to do 15 CHPS compounds in three regions of the country.”
“This is woefully [inadequate], sending us backward because in the last government the policy was every district assembly should construct two.”
He said Ghana had attained an enviable record of being a champion of universal health coverage in sub-Saharan Africa, fearing the decision by the government to build just 15 CHPS compound in four regions could detract from government’s successes.
According to him, the policy will only lead to inequity in the provision of health facilities across the country.
He said “inequity in poor governance that leads to poor distribution of resources. Inequity leads to inequality where others have access and others don’t,” he stated.
The Binduri MP also criticized what he said were the government’s failure to fight the spread of HIV.
Instead of the government implementing policies that will check the spread of HIV, the MP said the government is only “lamenting” about the situation, which he insisted was not good enough.
