A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a security man in his late 20s to seven years imprisonment for stealing GH¢7,700 from the President of the Baptist University College, located at Amakom in Kumasi. Collins Abuga was also given an additional three years for trying to escape from lawful custody. He pleaded guilty to the charges. Police Inspector Martin Assenso told the Court presided over by Mr Justice William Boampong, that Abuga was an employee of the Mangada Security Service and had been posted to the University for security duties. He said the Complainant, Reverend Dr. Kojo Osei-Wusu, who is the immediate past president of the Ghana Baptist Convention and the President of the University, instructed Abuga to accompany a telephone technician to work on his faulty telephone lines in his office. Abuga took advantage of the situation and after the work, combed the complainant's office and stole the amount which was meant for collection by someone the next day. Inspector Assenso said when Reverend Osei-Wusu could not find the money the following day, he summoned all the employees and asked them but they all denied knowledge of it. A complaint was made to the police who invited the staff and after interrogation,they were granted a police inquiry bail to report daily to the station for further investigations. The Prosecutor said Abuga after the bail bolted but upon a tip off, the police arrested him on October 3, this year at Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region and brought him to Kumasi. The police retrieved GH¢7,700 from him during a search on him. The prosecutor said Abuga told the police that he had used some of the money to buy a motorbike while the rest is kept in a house at Kaase, a surburb of Kumasi and therefore, led the police to the house. He said one laptop, four cell phones, and a motorbike were retrieved from the room. Inspector Assenso said while they were returning from the house, Abuga forced the handcuff open and attempted to run away but was over powered by the police and was rearrested.Source: GNA
