Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament Major Derrick Oduro (rtd) is demanding a beef-up of security in Parliament to protect Members of Parliament (MPs) and property of the State.
He fears that residents of Sodom and Gomorrah might attack the House in their bid to register their displeasure over the demolition exercise undertaken by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Saturday.
Speaking to Joy News’ Parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey the MP for Nkoranza North said the residents destroyed property and injured policemen on duty Monday when they took over the State House and Parliament.
Hundreds of homeless residents at Old Fadama in Accra whose houses were demolished Saturday occupied the State House Monday demanding to see the president.
The protestors numbering about 500 took to the streets blocking some of the major roads in Accra, particularly the ceremonial road around National Theatre before making their way to the State House.
They brandished placards eulogising the New Patriotic Party flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo and shouting No Akufo-Addo, no vote in 2016.
The protestors were angry over the demolition of their houses and demanded to see the president but had the police to content with since the president was not at the State House at the time of their visit.
They turned violent, attacking some police officers who tried to prevent them from taking the law into their own hands.
They destroyed several properties leaving the police with no choice than to resort to the use of tear gas when they could no longer control the violent crowd.
Meanwhile, police in Accra have arrested 35 residents of Sodom and Gomorrah who were part of a violent demonstrations Monday morning.
