The Sole Commissioner looking into judgment debts in the country has called on government agencies to handle issues of staff with urgency to spare the government from paying huge sums in judgment debts.
The commissioner, Justice Yaw Appau, was not happy with the impudence with which some government instittions treat issues relating to their staff.
He made the comments, Wednesday, during hearing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' handling of welfare issues relating to retired staff.
Three former staff members won judgment debts against the Ministry after the non-payment of retirement packages.
According to the Sole Commissioner, this state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue because it puts unnecessary strain on the country's limited resources and affects the economy as a whole.
He was particularly angry with officials at the Foreign Affairs ministry because the cases were referred to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and for which rulings were given against the ministry, but it refused to comply.
CHRAJ had to go to court to enforce its ruling, the commission noted.
