Every year, for one complete ninth month in the Islamic calendar, as an adult Muslim, one is required to fast from dawn to sunset in the month of Ramadan. Fasting is an opportunity to develop qualities of endurance and self-restraint, to control anger and a sweltering language.
The main purpose of fasting as described in the Quran "so that you may attain Taqwa or God-consciousness." Fasting is an instrument for bringing us closer to our natural state for cleansing from the dross of any disobedience.
It is against this backdrop that Islamic Council for Development and Humanitarian Services (ICODEH) is calling on the Muslims to use this holy month not to only pray for peace in Ghana and the world but to work towards peaceful coexistence among non Muslims.
ICODEHS also urge Ghanaians to guard against malevolent comments on the election petition currently at the Supreme Court which is likely to mar the national peace and undermine our judicial system.
ICODEHS reminds the Muslims to make the feelings, lessons and attitudes of the fasting stay with them during their "normal" lives as in the Qur'an, Muslims are commanded to fast so that they may "learn self-restraint" (Qur'an 2:183).
May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and bring peace to Ghana and the World as a whole.
Sheikh Mustapha Ibrahim
Executive Chairman
