A Steering Committee to provide policy guidelines for the smooth implementation and management of the Urban Transportation Project has been inaugurated by the Urban Transportation Centre in Accra.The project is aimed at solving the difficulties in urban transportation, that is, introduce better management of the country’s urban transportation network to minimize problems such as heavy traffic congestion especially during rush hours.The Steering Committee for Urban Transportation which is made up of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives from the Greater Accra, Tema and the Central Regions will also develop a framework within the Route Service Contacts for the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit across the country.The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashietey who inaugurated the committee stressed the need for members to work hand in hand with the various transport unions such as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Progressive Transport Association (PROTOA) to achieve its mandate.He commended the transport operators for the maturity they have displayed in ensuring the smooth implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit project.Mr. Ashietey urged members of the committee to be committed and dedicated to their work in attaining the goals of the project.“We shall give you the needed support and co-operation that you require to effectively and efficiently function as a Committee” he said.Present at the inauguration were the Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Alfred Oko Vanderpuye, MCE for Tema, Kempes Ofosuware, a representative of the Central Regional Minister, District Chief Executives of the participating Assemblies and their Coordinating Directors, Directors of the Department of Urban Roads and the Chief Executive Officer of the newly established Centre for Urban Transportation.Story by Adwoa Gyasiwaa/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana.
