The Christian Council of Ghana has urged churches to comply with directives of city authorities not to make too much noise.
It follows the recent closure of the Spintex branch of the Ebenezer Worship Centre which residents accused of making too much noise.
Some residents, angry at the situation conferred with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly which pressed charges.
“You can’t sleep; you can’t burry your head in the pillow,” a concerned resident complained vehemently.
“If you are at this area you see this church…they make a lot of noise and you can’t have a peace of mind,” another resident indicated.
The Christian Council has demanded that churches cooperate with city authorities to avoid any confrontation with the law.
The AMA has warned more churches in the capital face closure if they continue making noise beyond the accepted measure, that’s according to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Fred Degbe said Christians should obey the Biblical admonition of “love your neighbour as yourself” and not resort to offending people with excessive noise.
“I as a pastor, if I want to sleep [and] the church next door is making all the excessive noise, it irritates me. So noise pollution affects everybody and we must be considerate, as churches, of our neighbours who are either sick or who need their sleep,” Reverend Degbe said.
Reverend Degbe however called on the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, to educate churches on what noise levels are acceptable, especially within a residential area.
