Sunderland are understood to have approached Manchester United over the possibility of signing striker Danny Welbeck.

The two clubs discussed the matter following Sunday's 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light as United continue to struggle in the early stages of the campaign.

The England international came off the bench to try and have an impact late on in the north east as he replaced Robin van Persie. It's understood United informed the Black Cats a deal could be possible, but now want to speak with the England striker.

United would prefer to send the 23-year-old out on a 12-month loan, so they can dictate the future landscape. Welbeck enjoyed a similar period on Wearside back in 2010 but Sunderland have made it clear they want to conclude a permanent deal this time around.

The Red Devils value Welbeck in the region of £15m but boss Louis van Gaal will have the ultimate say.
