Security detail in the Tain constituency has arrested a man for attempting to smuggle arms into the area that is considered volatile as it decides who becomes Ghana’s next president.
Two accomplices of the unidentified man, on board a vehicle with registration number GE 2861 Y, managed to escape into a nearby bush at Abrampaso, the main entrance into the Tain constituency. The man in question has been taken to the 3BN military base in Sunyani.
According to Joy FM’s correspondent covering the election, Elton John Brobbey, the security were making their routine checks on people entering the area when they intercepted the M16 assault rifle and a gadget that helps the user to hit at his target well, which were being conveyed into the area.
“The military command would not disclose further information on this very arrest,” he says.
Meanwhile, voting is underway in the constituency is smooth, in spite of a threat of court injunction filed by the New Patriotic Party.
Moreover, Brobbey says the area is “a bit scaring”.
Voting has also been slow as a lot of people are unwilling to come out to cast their ballot for fear of being harmed or for some other reason due to the presence of heavily armed security personnel.
At one of the polling stations, out of 152 voters expected to cast their ballot, only 15 people had exercised their franchise as at 9:30.
The presence of the gun-totting security personnel,John Brobbey said, appearers to scare voters, and coupled with the absence of NPP supporters accounted for the low turnout as at the time he was reporting.
