Teachers in the Brong Ahafo Region are on the streets protesting the continued stay in office of the executives of the Ghana National Association of Teachers as well as the National Association of Graduate Teachers. Joy News correspondent Michael Sarpong reports the teachers are clad in red arm bands and ‘T’-shirts and are brandishing placards with different inscriptions, most of which are demanding the immediate resignation of the executives of the two associations. The chanting teachers went to the Regional Directorate of Education, Sunyani to present a petition to the Director. One of the leaders of the demonstration, Peter Adanu told the correspondent the executives must resign with immediate effect to pave way for a more competent leadership to negotiate better working conditions for teachers. He also warned government that teachers will lock up the classrooms and head back to the streets if their March salaries are replete with distortions. In February teachers embarked on a nationwide protest after their salaries recorded minimal (in some cases negative) improvements after migration onto the single spine salary structure. They blame government for reneging on its promise to teachers; and executives of GNAT and NAGRAT for not negotiating well on behalf of teachers. With the announcement of the 15 per cent retention premium for teachers, the threats of strike have subsided with some teachers turning their anger now on the executives of the two teacher associations. The demonstration in Sunyani follows a similar one held in Kumasi early this week in which the Coalition of Concerned Teachers poured unto the streets to demand the resignation of the executives of the teacher associations.
