Teachers in seventeen basic schools at the Asem Cluster of Schools in Kumasi who boycotted classes in protest over widespread cattle invasion of their campuses have defied all calls to suspend their protest. Not even an assurance by the Metro Chief Executive, Samuel Sarpong that affected schools would be fenced when he met the teachers could force them back to the classrooms. The defiant teachers say they have seen enough of the cattle threats and empty assurances, saying they will not go back to the classrooms until they see concrete steps from city authorities. They say their lives and that of over 2,700 pupils are in danger following recent assault on a head teacher and two pupils by rampaging cattle. Head teacher of Yaa Asantewaa M/A Basic School, Joseph Amankwaa was last week knocked down by roaming cattle on school premises, critically injuring him in the process. Spokesperson of the affected schools, Owusu Bempah who presented petition to the Kumasi mayor in the presence of heads of all affected schools said particular attention should be paid to fragile kindergarten pupils. “Our worry mostly concerns the innocent kindergarten children who we all know are feeble and delicate. Should we classify a learning environment of this kind as safe and secured where cattle graze right in front of classrooms”, the petition questioned. Kumasi mayor, Samuel Sarpong enthused by the request of the defiant teachers could not hold back his laughter when it appeared they wanted to embolden the assembly. But after a careful thought, he appealed to the teachers to rescind their decision and go back to the classrooms. According to him, the assembly will soon construct a fence wall in affected schools. “I want to assure you, you go back to the school, you will see positive results”. “It’s not going to be only Asem Cluster of Schools alone; we are going to make sure that other schools are also fenced”. But it seems there is no solution in sight with the teachers still defiant about their plans. But Mr. Owusu Bempah insisted those promises will not compel them back to the classroom.
