The Chief Executive Officer of Kama Group Limited, Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo says teachers in second cycle institutions need to inculcate entrepreneurship skills into their students as a measure to curb the growing rate of unemployment. According to him, a primary cause of the increasing rate of unemployment in the society is the practice where students are taught only conventional subjects and are thus left without the necessary fundamental skills that they would need in the real world. Dr. Agyekum Addo was speaking at one-day seminar on entrepreneurship held for teachers in some selected senior high schools across the country. The seminar which was held by the Kama Education Project (KEP) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, was under theme “Linking Courses of Learning to Entrepreneurship; the Teacher Factor”. According to Dr. Agyekum Addo, teachers must challenge their students to come up with innovations that could create employment opportunities to ease the burden on the government. He said teachers should not only teach their students entrepreneurship but also take to entrepreneurship and make some additional income. Dr. Agkyekum Addo noted that the 21st Century education involves a comprehensive use of ICT, hence teachers must also revise their teaching methods to meet the new challenges that may arise. The CEO of KEP appealed to the GES as a matter of urgency to buy into the initiative that would see second cycle teachers re-trained to meet challenges in the educational sector. He said this would make sure more teachers undergo entrepreneurial training thereby giving the initiative a widespread appeal. The Director General of GES, Madam Naana Biney, said her outfit would give the initiative a thought as well as ensure the project is taken to teachers in remote areas. She said teachers must be in touch with the entrepreneurial revolution in the 21st century and called on them to strive to understand their students and also help them to develop ideas out of the subjects they teach.
