The rising levels of water in the Volta Lake has inundated at least 10 communities, causing massive destruction to food and property in the Kpando District, Mr Francis Ganyaglo, District Chief Executive has announced. He said a total of 1,965 people were displaced, while 350 houses and 313 acres of farmland had submerged. Mr Ganyaglo, who announced this at the third ordinary assembly meeting, at Kpando, said River Dayi had overflowed its banks causing considerable damage especially to farm lands along Jordan-Nu and Vakpo and their environs. He said the worst affected victims were the recalcitrant people who flouted layout demarcations and built or cultivated lands beyond the approved limits. Mr Ganyaglo said the Assembly would wage a relentless war against such recalcitrant citizens but in the interim directed the National Disaster Management Organisation, Information Services Department and Environmental Health Directorate and Zoomlion to embark on educational campaigns in the affected areas to draw attention to the environmental and health consequences of the flooding. He, therefore, appealed to traditional councils and landowners to release parcels of land to the affected people as they allege it was becoming unbearable to have access to land to settle on safer grounds. Mr Ganyaglo said with the collaboration of Ms Akua Sena Dansua, Minister of Sports and Member of Parliament for North Dayi, some relief items were distributed to victims with more help expected. On road projects, he said about 50.73 kilometres of networks, estimated at GHC 303,435, was due for rehabilitation, reshaping and re-gravelling. These include the Kpando town roads, Kpando-Dzigbe-Gborfe, Vakpo-Wusuta Gboxome and the Aveme-Danyigba-Tsyome-Sabadu-Awate stretches. Mr Ganyoglo said its Common Fund worth GHC 99,566 had financed the construction of a computer laboratory at the Bishop Herman Senior High School while the construction of a meat shop, district fire station and paving of the residency were being advertised for tenders. Under the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND), a total of GHC 787,433 would be expended on the construction of five six-unit classroom blocks, office and library for five communities. He said tenders had been opened for additional construction of five such blocks with the Assembly submitting proposals for consideration by GETFUND for additional 19 school blocks. Source: GNA
