The Church Cleaner: Message from a Listener

Now, I promised you a message from one of our listeners every Thursday morning, so here's another one. It was sent to me by Major Miki Nkrumah. I like it very much, but tell me what you think. It's called The Church Cleaner.

She was always at the church premises by 6am wearing faded jeans, an old T shirt and some slippers. She always came to clean the chapel and arrange the seats. For six years, she had never missed a single Sunday morning cleaning session. One Sunday, a young man walked into the chapel while she was still cleaning. He sat down in a chair at the back of the hall, watching as the lady cleaned. He was impressed that someone who looked quite good even in her old clothes, and with a scarf over her hair, could be so dedicated to such menial work.

He thought to himself that this must be an unfortunate young lady who probably had no one to pay for her schooling. She was probably an orange seller or some petty trader, struggling to make ends meet. Aas he watched her, he suddenly felt a self of conviction in his heart within his heart he felt he now knew what God wanted him to do.

When he had felt a compulsion to come very early to church he had not understood but now he thought he did. He went back to his car and took out two 50 cedis notes and when the lady finished her work and was about to leave he called her, commended her for her service and gave her the notes. She respectfully declined the gift but he insisted pressing it into her hands. She said "thank you" with a smile, embarrassed.

He asked if she lived close by, and whether he could go drop her so she would not be late. She thanked him and told him that her car was nearby. He heard what he said, but did not quite comprehend, or give much thought to what she had said.

He walked her out of the church, determined to find out all he could about this lady, whose fortunes God had sent him to change. He chattered away happily as they exited the chapel, telling her where he worked, and how God had asked him to come early to church that day and how he believed God is directing him to help make a big difference in her life.

He was so busy talking, he had not realized they had walked directly to a car parked under some trees in the parking lot. The car made his one year old Mercedes look like a worn out wheel barrow. The lady opened the driver’s door sat in, handed over her card to the man and said, “I believe God sent you here for a purpose, but I do not think it was to change my fortune. Maybe it was to change yours.”

At that point, it would have taken a forklift to shut the young man's mouth, as the lady started her engine and drove off. God indeed had a purpose for bringing him to church that morning, and that purpose was to teach him humility. Now, two people always clean the chapel every Sunday morning.

Many times we think so highly of ourselves that when God sends us to learn we go in trying to teach. We may be men created in the image of God but if only we can remain humble enough to learn, even ants could be the professors imparting valuable knowledge to us.

My name is Kojo Yankson, and I thank you for inspiring the nation.

GOOD MORNING, GHANAFO!
