A Coordinator with the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation says Ghana is suffering from a "national lack of priority" in sanitation issues.
Benjamin Lartey is convinced "the right of the child is not respected and enforced" especially, when it comes to issues about sanitation.
He was reacting to a Ghana Education Service (GES) research, which indicated that over 10,000 public schools had no proper places of convenience.
Lartey believes the figure provided is on the low side.
Joy News' Kwakye Afreh Nuamah, who visited the Nima cluster of Schools in Accra reported of a messy situation encountered by the pupils.
One of the teachers, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity said the school has no toilet facility and so the pupils are forced to use the untidy public toilet facility in the neighbourhood anytime they want to attend to nature's call.
He said the young pupils are usually accompanied by their senior colleagues and sometimes have to join long queues before having their turn.
The situation at the La Amos cluster of schools is no different, Afreh-Nuamah reported as pupils narrated horrifying experiences they go through anytime they want to attend to nature's call.
Benjamin Lartey told Joy News' Evans Mensah the country has shown little commitment in solving the sanitation problems, especially in public schools.
According to him, the national budget allocates very little for sanitation and this reflects at the district assemblies.
He said the district assemblies build schools without regard to providing places of convenience for the pupils.
He therefore called for extra resources to be provided for the construction of toilet facilities.
