Two young men at Odorna, a suburb of Accra, were nearly carried away by the early morning heavy rains that hit parts of Accra and other parts of the country Saturday.
The two, Essel Nkesiah, 25, and Kofi Ansah, 19, both mechanics, were defecating in the gutters of Odorna near the New Melcom building at Avenor in Accra when the incident happened.
The two men were rescued by one Pastor Daniel Ohemeng and the residents of Odorna.
Narrating their story to Adom News after their rescue, the two said they were taking advantage of the rains “to do [their] own thing”, when they suddenly found themselves being washed away.
“We thank God for our lives,” they said, in an apparent expression of shock.
Elsewhere in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region, the rains have destroyed several properties including stores, and razed down three buildings worth several millions of cedis.
Some disgruntled shop owners who spoke to Adom News said they would demonstrate on Monday against the Assembly for supervising shoddy roads and poor drainage systems in the area.
They complained of shallow gutters that are almost always unable to channel the huge volume of water collected when it rains.
In a related development, just when some residents of Ashaiman had fully recovered from the devastating floods that hit that part of the capital, taking lives and property, many others are said to be vacating their homes for fear of being carried away by the increasing flood volumes.
Memories of the past is said to be haunting most of the visibly shaken residents who spoke to Adom News.
They made reference to the June 20 incident in which several people were drowned following a similar downpour.
The assemblyman for Obakatse electoral area, who gave his name only as Adongo, said the area is flood-prone, adding, nothing has been done in the area to solve the problem after the rains caused havoc there three months ago.
