Two officers of the Winneba District Police were shot and killed in a gun battle with suspected armed robbers Monday night, a police spokesperson has said.
The incident happened at Gomoa Pomadzie near Winneba in the Central Region after the robbers had gone to rob some students at the Pan African University College.
The deceased officers are Lance Corporal Francis Appiah and Lance Corporal Emmanuel Tetteh.
The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Alhassan has described the death of the two officers as unfortunate. The IGP was there together with other senior police officers to assess the situation.
Central Regional Correspondent Richard Kwadwo Nyarko says none of the suspected robbers has been arrested.
Mr. Mahama says the police administration would need to revise the training strategy for its personnel.
Meanwhile, two other highway robbery cases were reported last night at Achiase and Aseseeso both in the Eastern Region.
At Achiase, the driver of a passenger bus was reportedly shot by armed robbers after refused to stop when the robbers signaled him to. They shot the driver and robbed the passengers of monies and other valuables.
A passenger on the bus told Joy News the driver was rushed to a hospital. The bus was travelling from Mankessim to Akyem Oda.
At Aseseeso, the robbers blocked the road at about 4am and robbed the passengers of a number of vehicles. A driver who was transporting passengers from Somanya to Koforidua, was also reportedly shot after he refused to stop when signaled by the robbers.
