United Front Party is asking the Electoral Commission to apply Political Parties Law that put responsibility on political parties to show physical presence in at least, in two-thirds of the 216 administrative districts.

The Electoral Commission earlier this year issued a directive to all political parties to have offices opened in two-thirds of the administrative districts of the country by May 31, 2016 or risk a ban.

The party’s Flagbearer Nana Agyenim Boateng wants the EC to crack the whip by banning erring political parties from the 2016 elections.

Section 9 of the Political Parties Law, Act 574 (2000) puts a responsibility on parties to ensure that they have branches in all the regions.

Political parties are also required to organize itself in not less than two-thirds of the districts in each region.

According to a 2013 report of the EC, out of the 23 registered political parties, only the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) met the physical presence requirement. 

About 22 political parties and independent candidates have picked their forms to contest the Presidency.

The United Front Party blames EC’s failure to apply the law to the latter for being the cause of widespread political parties.

Dr. Nana Agyenim Boateng believes the law when applied will ensure sanity.

“You have seen that when the nomination was opened some of the political parties that do not meet the requirement have picked forms so we are pleading the E.C make sure that the law works”, he said.

He reveals his party cannot field parliamentary candidates in all constituencies due to rising cost in filling fees.

“For the Presidential, we have no problem but the parliamentary is too much, the opposition parties especially cannot field Parliamentary candidates in all constituencies”, he emphasized.
