The Minister-designate for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, says the NDC government will uncap the resources of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GetFund) to generate additional financial resources for the education sector, to enhance public education in the country.
In response to a question from the outgoing Minister for Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum, regarding how he would secure funds to improve the public education system, particularly at the basic level, Mr Iddrisu revealed that, under his leadership, he would advocate for uncapping GetFund.
He explained, “The current cap on GetFund is about GH₵ 3.2 billion, and unfreezing it would make available to the Ministry of Education GH₵ 7.9 billion, which would significantly accelerate and expand infrastructure.”
The MP highlighted that these funds could address critical issues within the education sector. “There are about 2,800 schools that need repairs to address overcrowding, and approximately 26,000 schools lack proper changing facilities for young girls for hygiene purposes. Additionally, around 780 schools require expansion to increase access to junior high school education,” he said.
He emphasised, “We will uncap GetFund, and I will engage the Minister for Finance to make this a priority.”
During his brief vetting session, the Tamale South MP expressed confidence in making significant improvements in Ghana’s public education system.
He assured that the new government would not abandon the efforts initiated by the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
