Students of the University of Ghana, Legon say they will stage a demonstration on Thursday to protest the increasing spate of armed robberies on campus.
The President of the Students’ Representative Council, Tony Senaya said the armed robbery situation was getting out of hand and students’ felt insecure.
According to him, several students and lecturers had fallen victim to the armed robbery attacks.
Thursday’s demonstration would therefore seek to draw the attention of the school authorities to the porous security measures on campus.
In the latest incident, a male student was last Friday shot in the genitals by a gang of criminals who stormed a hall of residence.
Previously, on Sunday the same week, a student was attacked by criminals who wanted to snatch his car from him, followed on Tuesday by another attack at an internet cafe in a hall of residence.
The Dean of Students, Dr. Bruce Banoeng-Yakubu said the University had okayed the protest march, but said it would be a procession and not a demonstration.
He however denied suggestions that University authorities were not doing anything to curb the armed robbery activities.
