African Union Chairman Dr. Thomas Yayi Boni has congratulated Ghana's president-elect, John Dramani Mahama, and charged him to preside over an all-inclusive government.
Dr. Yayi Boni, who paid a courtesy call to President Mahama at the Castle in Osu Monday, praised the country for organizing yet another peaceful and transparent election.
He said that the reports he received from the international observers and his dialogue with the leader of the AU Observer Mission, former Nigerian president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, corroborated reports of a peaceful election.
Dr. Yayi Boni, who is also the President of Benin, called the election a victory not only for President Mahama, but also for the people of Ghana and the whole African continent in light of the people’s peaceful comportment during the exercise.
He thanked Mahama for presiding over what he called a transparent, violence-free, and principled election and congratulated the Electoral Commission for introducing biometric verification into the electoral process.
He commended the opposition New Patriotic Party, adding that he hopes that the allegations of fraud that they are leveling against Mahama’s National Democratic Congress will be addressed through legal and judicial channels, not through violence.
He expressed the hope that during this coming term, President Mahama will establish and inclusive political dialogue, enhance peace, stability, security and accountability and fight corruption and impunity.
President Yayi Boni also invited President Mahama to the next African Summit in the Capacity of President the Republic of Ghana expected to take place in January 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
President Yayi Boni will also meet the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former president, John Agyekum Kufuor later Monday.
