The House of Bishops of the Church of the Province of West Africa (CPWA) has confirmed the election held on Saturday, January 21 at Ashalley Botwe in Accra of the Venerable Dr Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto, Archdeacon of the Accra-East Archdeaconry and the Diocesan Director of Programme as new Bishop-elect of the Anglican Diocese of Accra.
This was contained in a press release issued from the Accra Diocesan Secretariat and signed by the Rev’d Fr. S. O. M. Codjoe-Addy, Diocesan Communications Coordinator.
By the confirmation, the Ven. Dr. Torto, 53 years, will be consecrated as Bishop in Accra on June 24, this year and would have the right of succession to the incumbent Anglican Bishop of Accra when the Most Rev’d Dr Justice Ofei Akrofi retires on October 29 this year.
Until the Most Rev’d Akrofi retires in October, at age 70, in accordance with the Provincial Constitution, he would continue performing his ecclesiastical duties in the Diocese. The Most Rev’d Akrofi will assign to the new Bishop after the consecration duties to perform when necessary.
Consequently the Archbishop has recently issued the mandate directing that arrangements be made to consecrate Ven. Dr Torto as the new Bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Accra.
The Diocesan Bishop’s Nomination Committee scanned from among the clergy of at least six years of priestly ordination and above and after a three-day’s retreat presented three nominees to a special synod held at the Anglican Retreat Centre at Ashalley Botwe, where Ven. Dr Torto was elected.
The three nominees were the Very Rev’d Dr. Emmanuel I. K. Addo, Dean of the Most Holy Trinity Cathedral, Accra, Rev’d Canon George Kotei Neequaye, Lecturer at Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon and Ven. Dr. Torto.
After four rounds of voting, Ven. Dr Torto obtained over two-thirds majority of vote cast to be the Coadjutor Bishop-elect.
Ven. Dr Torto obtained his Doctorate of Ministry from Vision International University USA. He is a product of GIMPA, Accra- Post-grad CBA, Episcopal Divinity School- Cambridge, USA, holds M.A. Religions, BA (Hons) in Psychology and Religions-University of Ghana, Legon, Diploma in Theology, Trinity College, Legon and a product of the St. Thomas Aquinas School, Cantonment, Accra - Class 1978.
Parishes he has served include St. Francis of Assisi, Mamprobi, Accra, St. Barnabas, Osu-Accra, Cathedral Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Accra, St. Joseph Kaneshie and All Saints, Adabraka.
The Venerable Dr. Torto has been the Chairman of the Accra-East Archdeaconry which covers parishes such as St. Barnabas-Osu, St. Paul-La, St. Bartholomew-Teshie and St. Peter-Madina. Others include Holy Gabriel-Kotobabi, Ascension Church-Ashalley Botwe, Anglican Retreat Centre-Ashalley Botwe, St. Timothy-Nima and Holy Family-Adenta.
He is the Chairman-Board of Governors of the Anglican Senior High Technical School, Teshie, Member of Information Technology Faith Based Administration and Ministry, Ghana Telecommunication University, General Secretary-Ghana Anglican Clergy Association, Lecturer-Diocesan Ministerial Training School, Osu, Accra and was Rector to Anglican Seminarians at Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon among others.
The Venerable Dr Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto is a regular contributor to the Diocesan Voice (the Diocese of Accra’s newspaper) and the Daily Graphic newspapers on Pastoral and Human Resource Management/Organizational Behaviour features respectively. He loves reading and is married to Gladys, a Certified Caterer from Institute of Home Economics, Accra and has four sons.
