A High Court in Wa has annulled the suspension of the Rector of the Wa Polytechnic Prof Emmanuel Marfo Owusu.
The court presided over Justice Kwasi Boakye said the applicant was not given a fair hearing before being suspended.
He, therefore, awarded a ¢5,000 cost against the Respondent, led by the chairman of the governing council, of the Wa Polytechnic, Prof. Daniel Bagah.
Prof Emmanuel Marfo Owusu proceeded to court after he was suspended over alleged acts of corruption.
The Rector is alleged to have procured a vehicle for himself at the cost of over GHS 500,000 without the approval of the Governing Council.
The lecturers also accused him of procurement fraud and abuse of office and petitioned the school’s Governing Council to remove him from office.
But the Rector denied the allegations of fraud against him. According to him, as a professor with over seven years’ experience he was in the position to afford the Mercedez Benz.
His explanation did not go down well with the governing council.
Prior to his suspension, there was drama on campus with lecturers of the Polytechnic chasing him out of campus and threatening to beat him.
He proceeded to court to have the matter settled.
In his black suit, Professor Marfo appeared in court driving, Tuesday, not the luxurious controversial Benz, but a red Mitsubishi L200.
Throughout the court proceedings, he occasionally forced a smile on a seemingly disappointed face.
The respondents were led by the chairman of the governing council, Prof. Daniel Bagah accompanied by a dozen of lecturers and staff of the polytechnic.
Having heard the arguments of the parties, Justice Kwasi Boakye nullified the decision by the Polytechnic to suspend the applicant.
Given the posturing of the parties in court it may appear the tug of war at the polytechnic is far from over.
