Displaced Liberian refugees at the Buduburam camp in the Central region are appealing to the government for assistance to find a new settlement.
Their appeal comes after the Gomoah Traditional Authority demolished their settlement.
According to the traditional authority, the camp had become a haven for social deviants, including robbery gangs.
But speaking with JoyNews on February 28, the refugees denied the claims, stating that they were not thieves as they worked to earn an honest living for themselves.
Sharing their frustration after the demolition exercise, they said they were stranded and have since been forced to live in nearby school buildings.
A victim said “We have just got a school. Even when we approached the school, it was not so easy. The principal got annoyed, and we said, look, there is nowhere we can go. When crises comes, we look at the church and the school for our safety. This is why we have come to the school.”
Another refugee claimed that they were not informed about the intended demolishing exercise.
“This is the place where I am living. I do not know where I am going right now. See my machine outside? No notification. Just daybreak, they say they are coming to break our places. So, there is nowhere to go. We do not know what we are going to do. That is our problem right now," he said.
The District Chief Executive for Gomoa Fetteh, Solomon Darko-Quarm, said his outfit was communicating with the Chief of Gomoa Fetteh to resolve the issue.
He clarified that although he cannot guarantee the availability of shelter for the victims, he said tje demolition was not carried out by the assembly, and as a result, they were unable to arrange alternative accommodation for affected people.
