Chiefs in the Weija traditional council have issued a ten-day ultimatum for managers of landfill sites to construct drains for the facility.
It follows agitations by youth in the area that they will halt the operations of the facility.
Joy News’ Eric Ahianyo who was in Weija echoed the worrying concerns of the residents in the area.
The residents say the dump site, found in an old quarry site, seated on the hills of Weija, unleashes a terribly bad stench which fouls the environment. The dump site is reported to take over 700 tonnes of waste daily.
Even more worrying according to the residents is black liquid waste which leaks from the rocks and spreads at different directions into the community. They are particularly worried about the children in the area.
On Saturday, the youth mounted road blocks to prevent waste management trucks from offloading their rubbish.
They demanded the construction of drains as well as effective road networks in the area.
The chiefs in a subtle agreement with the youth have issued the ultimatum to the waste management groups to fulfill part of an agreement which demanded the road networks to be improved and drains constructed.
They say if there are no signs of construction in the area in ten days the waste management companies will be stopped from dumping refuse in the area.
Already some of the waste companies have attempted to appease the residents.
Daniel Asante, an official of the waste management company in the area tells Ahianyo they have started fumigating the area.
Officials from Zoomlion management were said to have met with the Weija traditional council to discuss the way forward.
