President John Evans Atta Mills has begun his four-day working visit to the Western Region.
The president is said to have been given a rousing welcome by the people of the region, when he arrived on Tuesday morning and has since been meeting the chiefs of the area.
At a durbar held in honour of the President, the paramount chief of Lower Discove, Nana Akwasi Agyeman called on the him to consider their request for a ten per cent share of the oil revenue from the region.
Nana Akwasi Agyemang reiterated the point that many people did not understand the chiefs' request whiles others assumed the ten per cent was for personal aggrandizement.
He said the request is borne out of the desire of the chiefs to ensure that the region adequately benefits from its resources.
He further stated that the Regional House of Chiefs is disappointed at the comments made by MP for Sene in the Brong Ahafo region, Felix Tsumasi Appiah who expressed resentment over the demands by the chiefs.
The MP in response to the chiefs' request said “I wonder why any person or a group of persons will claim ownership of the sea.”
He argued that even though his region - the Brong Ahafo - is endowed with gold, diamond, cocoa and other resources, the people are not clamouring for royalties and therefore did not see why others should.
But the western regional house of chiefs is calling on him to withdraw his comments or face unstated consequences.
Meanwhile the president is expected to commission some projects that have been completed and cut sods for the commencement of new ones.
