As a social commentator who understands the heartbeat of the Ghanaian music industry, I have watched many artistes come and go. However, Wendy Shay Official’s 2025–2026 run is uniquely different. It is a story of grit, reinvention, and undeniable impact. While others may possess fame, Wendy delivers the data, discipline, and growth that the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) criteria demand.
Many who support my assertion that she sits at the top this year are reflecting on her journey. Since 2018, Wendy has faced immense pressure. She began under the shadow of the late Ebony Reigns, enduring social media bullying and constant comparisons. In fact, the masses initially doubted her craft, but she chose consistency over complaints.
In a male-dominated industry, she did not merely survive; she became a powerhouse. By late 2025, she took the ultimate risk of becoming an independent artiste, reinvesting her own earnings into her career, a move demonstrating the professional maturity that the TGMA Board deeply respects.
However, I will focus my brief remarks on context - particularly the core requirements for the TGMA Artiste of the Year Award. This ensures the conversation moves beyond sentiment and empathy, focusing instead on her actual work, how she meets the award's core criteria, and how she stacks up against the formidable male giants in her category: Black Sherif, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, and Medikal.
To start with, the TGMA requires a hit single, EP, or album. While Stonebuoy maintained his consistency with the Torcher EP, Black Sherif continued to deliver his signature emotional anthems with the Iron Boy Album, and Medikal with heavy-hitting releases on the Disturbation 2 Album, Wendy Shay delivered a body of work that completely disrupted the ecosystem. She released the Ready album, which was not just a collection of songs but a cultural moment.
Operating without the backing of a major label machine- unlike her heavily resourced male peers- she secured seven nominations, including Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year, and Most Popular Song. Her hit singles "Too Late" and "Crazy Love" (featuring OliveTheBoy) dominated the airwaves, securing her place in the Best Collaboration and Afrobeats Song of the Year categories. She stood out because she matched the output of label-backed titans entirely on her own independent terms.
When discussing high-impact performances and audience appeal, the competition is undeniably fierce. Stonebwoy is known for electrifying sets, Medikal successfully hosted his Planning and Plotting concert, and Sarkodie held down his traditional Rapperholic 25:25. Yet, Wendy Shay’s stagecraft and audience pull were unprecedented for a solo female act. The ‘Shay Concert’ on November 22, 2025, at West Hills Mall was a masterclass in brand growth. By drawing an estimated 100,000 fans, she proved a massive audience appeal that rivaled-and in many ways exceeded-the solo pulls of her male contenders.
Beyond her own show, she was a force on every major stage. She performed at the Rapperholic 25:25 and the Shatta Fest at Independence Square, delivered a massive set at the GMB 2025 Grand Finale, and even graced Medikal’s Planning and Plotting concert, where she boldly declared her intent to sweep the 2026 awards. She is the genuine bridge-builder for women in the industry.
In all of these, her global recognition and brand growth were remarkable. While artists like Black Sherif and Stonebwoy are frequently lauded for their international footprint, Wendy Shay’s cross-border impact this review year was historic. Winning Best Female Artiste in West Africa at the 9th AFRIMA awards in early 2026 confirms her status as a global representative of Ghanaian excellence. For the record, she defeated top-tier continental contenders, including Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Moliy, and Amaarae, to claim that prestigious global award.
If you wonder why industry veterans like Kwesi Ernest have rightly called her the ‘queen of all female artistes,’ it is because she ticks every box: airplay, streaming numbers, brand expansion, and global content creators using her songs for their skits.
So, yes! Contenders like Black Sherif, Medikal, Stonebwoy, and Sarkodie are giants who performed exceptionally well during the year, but Wendy Shay has outpaced the field this season. She took the meaningless disbelief of her early years and transformed it into a legacy of resilience.
For her chart-topping hits, record-breaking concerts, and transition into a successful independent CEO who outperformed the industry's biggest male stars, Wendy Shay is not just a nominee- she is the only logical choice for the 2026 TGMA Artiste of the Year.
