Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has questioned what the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be admitting to if they issued an apology for the current economic hardship.
This Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong wants the NPP to acknowledge the current economic hardships in the country and apologise.
“Let’s go out there with humility, apologise to Ghanaians, and admit your mistakes before you can convince anybody to vote for you. If we ignore the hardships Ghanaians are going through, they will never accept what we are saying.”
But according to Dr Asah-Asante, would such an apology acknowledge mismanagement of the economy or other factors would be blamed.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on August 6, he said, “If you want to render an apology, we want to know a few things. Which of the problems we are facing do you want to admit that you have caused? Are they saying they have mismanaged the economy? Or are they still talking about the fact that it is Russian-Ukraine war?”
“If they want to apologise, we want to know. They should come clean and then be able to give us all the details that, we are apologising for our part, then we know,” he said.
He also pointed out that while an apology might not guarantee acceptance from the public, it is an important aspect of good governance.
“The fact that you have apologised does not mean that people will accept. But it’s a good thing in governance that you admit your fault. Whether people take it or not is another issue but at least you have come to what Aristotle calls self-introspection. You have examined your life and then you are coming out.
“Even though this one is at the instance of Kennedy Agyapong and all that, it is still within the party,” he said.
