Women groups in newly created Afram Plains district in the Ashanti region could soon be empowered economically as they benefit from financial and training package from the United States to improve their lot.
An American professor with interest and experience in women empowerment programs is already in the district to get first hand information on the peculiar needs of women in that district.
Assistant Professor at the Department of Humanities, Harris-Stowe University in Missouri, Reynaldo Anderson says fighting poverty among women in the area would not only make them economically viable but socially strong.
Though the area benefited from the Millennium Challenge Account, that is yet to bring social relief to the people who are predominantly farmers: poor road networks, food insecurity as well as lack of education remain a challenge.
Dr. Anderson wants government to do more to improve life of the rural-poor in the area.
“My first impression about the district is despite the poverty, the spirit of the people is surprisingly high. Government has to stop ignoring the issues of people that they think are too poor or under-educated to fight for themselves. Everyone counts in the society,” Dr Anderson said.
Dr. Anderson who is also the immediate past President of black caucus in the National of Black Communication Association would lead a campaign to solicit for financial and expert support from missionary groups or aid through private and federal government donations for women in the district.
He hopes to empower women in the form of education and equip them with needed life-changing tools that could form the basis of a new life.
