The Chairperson and Leader of the People's National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Anabla, has called on the government to reconsider its plan to establish a new bank, the Women's Development Bank, specifically to support women in trade.
She argued that the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) was established for a similar purpose, and it would be more prudent for President John Mahama's administration to consider using the GCB to support women in trade, as promised, rather than establishing a new bank.
"Instead of investing resources into creating a new bank, the PNP suggests leveraging the existing Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), which was founded for such initiatives. This would streamline efforts and ensure that women have the support they need without unnecessary expenditure and delay," she noted in a press statement issued on Monday, 10 March, to mark this year's International Women's Day celebration.
Before coming into office, the NDC government had promised to establish a Women's Development Bank to exclusively support women in small and medium-scale enterprises.
The bank is expected to offer Ghanaian women loans at low interest rates, oversee the running of their businesses, and ensure that women have more livelihood opportunities and greater financial freedom.
While the new government prepares to roll out the bank and make it operational, the opposition PNP leader believes there is no need to invest further resources into creating the bank.
According to her, this approach would save the country money and other resources, which could instead be channelled into another sector for development.
