The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) is appealing to the government to urgently address the infrastructure deficit and electricity challenges affecting academic work on campus.

According to President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) at Mampong Campus, Yusif Watara Drago, lecture halls and other facilities are inadequate to accommodate the rising student population, making teaching and learning increasingly difficult.

He stressed that the situation requires immediate government intervention to expand infrastructure and improve academic delivery.

“Our lecture halls are insufficient to accommodate the increasing number of students on the Mampong Campus. This is seriously affecting effective teaching and learning.

“We are appealing to the government to support us with more infrastructure to boost academic work and improve conditions on campus,” he said.

Yusif Watara Drago explained that the university relies heavily on the national electricity grid, which has been fluctuating. Although the campus has a generator, he noted that it is not powerful enough to supply electricity to the entire university.

He therefore appealed to old students, corporate bodies and other stakeholders to support the institution with solar energy systems to help address the energy crisis and ensure smooth academic activities.

“The university depends on the national electricity grid, and whenever there is a power outage, evening and night lectures are disrupted. Although we have a generator, it is not sufficient to power the entire university.”

“We are calling on old students, corporate bodies and other stakeholders to support us with solar panels to help solve the energy crisis on campus.”

The SRC President further indicated that AAMUSTED Mampong Campus is the only university in the Asante Mampong Municipality, yet its football pitch is in a deplorable state. He said the poor condition of the pitch makes it difficult for students to adequately prepare for national competitions.

He appealed to authorities, including the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and other football stakeholders to assist the university with an AstroTurf facility.

He made these remarks during the 2025/2026 Academic Year Matriculation Ceremony held at the Mampong Campus.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of AAMUSTED, Professor Frederick Kwaku Sarfo, assured students that the university remains committed to equipping them with industry-relevant skills and entrepreneurial training as part of its academic package.

"The university is committed to equipping students with industry-relevant skills and entrepreneurial training to prepare them for the job market.”

He stated that the Academic Affairs Directorate will compile the necessary data to facilitate payments under the government’s flagship No-Fees-Stress Scholarship Programme for first-year students.

Professor Sarfo also outlined available sources of financial assistance for students facing challenges, including support from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, Ghana Gas, and the Students Loan Trust Fund, among other funding agencies.

He added that the university has enhanced internet access through improved Wi-Fi connectivity to support teaching, learning and research.

The institution has also provided art tools, equipment, workshops and laboratory facilities to strengthen practical training and skills development.

The Vice-Chancellor advised students to take their academic work seriously, protect the AAMUSTED brand and project an image that reflects excellence, integrity and professionalism.

“Students must take their academics seriously and protect the brand of AAMUSTED by demonstrating excellence, integrity and professionalism," he said.
