Work on Malam dump site to resume next week

Minister for Sanitation and Water resources, Joseph Adda has assured that work on the 15 acre dump site at the Malam market will start next week.

The three waste management companies contracted to reclaim the land halted work on the site due to financial constraints.

It was a market at the verge of an epidemic weeks ago when Joy News’ Komla Adom visited the area.

Traders and customers had to boycott the area due to the unbearable stench from the dump site. Some of the traders suffered health complications due to the excessive dumping of waste at the site.

A 30 year-old trader, Nafisa was one of them. She told Komla it was almost impossible to breathe or do anything in the market.

There was however some relief after the reclamation exercise began, but the traders fear the situation will get worse.

Waste management companies – Zoomlion, Asadu Royal and Stanley Companies – tasked to fill the entire land mass have stopped work after funds from government seized.

But Mr Adda said his outfit is working to secure finance for the project and work will resume as soon as clearance is given in the coming week.

He will also embark on a visit to the area to assess progress of work done so far.
