The National Youth Organiser of the Convention People's party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh, otherwise known as Kabila, is asking whether ex-President Jerry John Rawlings would pass the much-espoused principles of the June 4 revolution for which a number of people were killed.
The 1979 June 4 uprising, according to its adherents, was carried out based on the principles of ‘Probity, Accountability and Social Justice’.
Mr Rawlings who has since 1979 commemorated the event, has over the years been critical of all governments for a number of issues he believes had not been given the due attention.
President John Evans Atta Mills, since assuming office in 2009, has been on the receiving end of Mr Rawlings' accusations for allegedly lacking focus, not being in charge of his government and superintending corrupt practices by his appointees.
However the CPP Youth Organiser, who was speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme Monday, stated that by the principles of the June 4 uprising, Mr Rawlings should have tasted the same medicine he subjected others to, including the three former heads of state.
He explained that after the uprising, the soldiers were ordered to go back to their barracks and urged never to plot a coup again.
“Seven years in office, the army was going back to barracks without any steps having been taken to punish those who had tarnished the name of the armed forces.
“This situation posed a threat to the continued existence of the armed forces and the stability of the country, hence the spontaneous action of June 4 to pre-empt the coup immediately after handing over to a civilian administration,” Kabila quoted Mr Rawlings at the time.
He maintained that Mr Rawlings broke this same principle and orchestrated the 31 December, 1981 coup which overthrew the civilian regime of Dr Hilla Limann.
“… by this principle [Mr Rawlings], should he be walking a free man?” Kabila quizzed, adding that “by the principles of June 4, it is very, very, very normal [that he is prosecuted by the state and shot dead] just as Afrifa and Acheampong were shot for engaging in a coup d’etat against a constitutionally elected government.”
Quoting Lt. Gen. Ocran, one of the architects of the coup against Dr Nkrumah in his book, ‘The Politics of the Sword’, Mr Bomfeh said he believed that "soldiers should leave politics alone, when they try to run a country in spite of their enthusiasm, they run it badly because they are right from the beginning expected to assume the role of policy makers in a job for which they have had no previous training.
“They should never purport to govern; they cannot because they generally lack the political education, the mentality and above all the flexibility of mind and approach to governmental problems.
“The officer who tries to serve two masters by combining politics and military duties becomes at once a bad soldier and a bad politician,” he espoused.
“And that is what former President Rawlings became and wasted the time of the people of this country for 12 good years,” Kabila insisted.
He added that his criticism of the former president was to expose “the hypocrisy of the character [that is] Jerry John Rawlings” who still celebrates June 4.
In his view, Mr Kwabena Bomfeh thinks there is no need for anyone to celebrate the June 4 uprising because the 31 December coup broke all principles the uprising stood for.
“So on 31st December, 1981, June 4 became useless, nonsense, and above all unworthy of celebration,” Kabila averred.
