Mr. Abuga Pele, Coordinator of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), on Saturday observed that youth unemployment in Ghana is a critical issue that must be tackled dispassionately.
He said the country must find ways of harnessing the energies of the millions of youth pouring into the "streets" every year from the different levels of education, before their frustrations turn to negative activities.
Mr. Pele was addressing the Rotary Club Ho Chapter's 25th Anniversary and President's Fund Raising Ball in Ho.
He said youth unemployment needed to be de-politicized saying delay in finding solution to it could wreck havoc in the country as it had done in some other countries.
Mr. Pele said government would continue to harness the unemployed youth into various areas of the economy under the Youth Employment Programme, which started in 2006.
He said efforts were being made to link up those who have completed their two-year programme under the Youth Employment Scheme to the job markets both within and out of Ghana.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries will work with an institution for two years, within which they were expected to have acquired some skills and training, to secure permanent jobs or become self-employed.
At the Ball, Mr Emmanuel Forster Boateng, was formally inducted into office as President of Ho Rotary Club for 2010/2011.
He pledged to pursue the Rotarian principle of extending help to the disadvantaged, attract more people especially indigenes into the fold of the Club and charter a club at Aflao among other things.
Ms Mariam Adzroe, the immediate Past President, also the first female President, said Rotary Ho, during her tenure, was able to complete the Club's community center.
She said the Club also held Christmas parties for the sick at the children wards of the Regional and Municipal Hospitals both in Ho.Source: GNA
