Yvonne Okoro may have had her first major movie role due to a certain resemblance to actress Jackie Appiah in ‘Beyonce’, when she took up Jackie’s character after she had undergone plastic surgery.
But Yvonne has grown to hold her own as an actress, after starring in over a dozen movies including Agony of Christ, Royal Battle and Queen of Dreams.
After almost a year away in Paris studying French Civilization, Drama and Culture, Yvonne is back in Ghana with full throttle starring in about 8 movies yet to be released.
With her new knowledge in drama from France, coupled with a cameo appearance in the low-budget French film, ‘Le Hotelier’, she hopes to incorporate the acquired technicalities of acting into her career in Ghana.
Comparing the industry in France to Ghana, she observed that most actors in Ghana aren’t trained but just pick up acting because they either look good or because they need a job to keep them busy. “I hope to bring these experiences to bear and I hope the directors here would listen”, she comments.
Yvonne can be seen in the new Venus Production movie, ‘4play’ in which she plays the role of Ruby, an emotional and distressed wife who finds out her husband is bisexual. Her struggle to work it out with her husband results in an emotional journey that should leave viewers in a state of shock, anger and anxiety.
Yvonne, who hopes to have a career in Law, can also be seen in other upcoming releases such as: ‘The Game’ and ‘Desperate to Survive’. She also has a children’s book in both English and French in the offing.
Yvonne Okoro was born to a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother and has been living in Ghana for the most of her life. She had her earlier education at Achimota, Lincoln Community School, and Faith Montessori before having secondary education at Mfantsiman Girls School. She majored in Drama and Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Legon.
In 2002, Yvonne had her first acting role in the TV series, ‘Sticking to the Promise’ produced by Theo Akatugba. She later got role in ‘Tentacles’, yet another TV drama series produced by Akatugba.
According to Yvonne, her role in ‘Tentacles’ has been the most challenging, simply because of the format and production of television series. She recounts playing an old woman in ‘Desperate to Survive’ as her favourite role so far.
