The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says fans who would want to be at the 2026 World Cup would have to do it on their own.
According to him, there is no plan from the government to take supporters to the global tournament next year.
Adams sighted the country’s economic situation as the reason being the decision not to take supporters to the tournament.
“So far, the government has not given any indication that it will send supporters [to the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada],” he said in an interview on Peace FM.
“I don’t think it’s something I would recommend. We’re currently in a difficult economic situation. We even need funds to build sports infrastructure in Ghana, yet we’d be spending money to transport supporters all the way to America. That money could instead be used to build five multipurpose parks in some of the communities in need. I believe there are many people in these communities who would benefit greatly from such projects.
“If you want to go, find your own resources, we can facilitate your travel documents and you can go. Alternatively, you could seek support from corporate organizations, both private and public. Let’s mobilize and give support to the fans that way. Travel and tour is a business, but if the government teams up to get support, that would be a good idea. However, I don’t think it should be included in the national budget that government will fund supporters to attend.
“So far, the only aspect captured by the Minister for Finance concerns the costs related to our preparations and the national team’s participation.”
