As part of efforts to enhance teaching and learning of science in the country; MTN Ghana Foundation in collaboration with Dext Technology is deploying over two thousand (2,000) Science sets to pupils in deprived fourteen (14) selected Junior High Schools across the country.

In all, each school will receive 140 to 145 of these sets depending of on the student population in addition to a comprehensive user-training for selected science teachers in these schools.

The Senior Manager for Sustainability and Social Impact, MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe, presenting the items to Nima Cluster of Schools in Accra, said MTN Ghana Foundation is passionate about equipping the next generation with the requisite skills and information on the relevance of science and technology.

According to him, in selecting these schools, priority was given to some MTN-adopted schools nationwide as this will help MTN revisit these schools and ensure a continuous support for these schools.

Other criterion for selection include absence of science labs and B.E.C.E. performance of students in science.

“So far, training for 28 science teachers in these selected schools have been completed and the distribution of the sets has begun in the Greater Accra Region with La Nkwantanang Cluster of Schools and Nima Cluster of Schools. The total cost of this projects is GHC126,060.00,” he noted.

Also, the Marketing Officer of Dext Technology Caleb Fugal bemoaned the short fall in the study of science in Africa.

Due to the huge gap, he indicated that, they decided to partner with MTN to help address this challenge in order to enhance the study of science in the country.

Mr. Fugal  noted that, the initiative would go a long way to build the interest in the young people to study science courses and it will also bridge the gap between the underprivileged institutions and the private schools.

“If really we want to transform the industrialized economy then we need to pay attention to science,” he emphasized.

The Head Teacher of Nima ‘1’Basic School Theodora Abalo, who received the items on behalf of the school in elation commended MTN Ghana for complimenting the efforts of the Ghana Education Service in the field of education and also entreated other organisations to emulate the example.

This she said, the science sets donated would go a long way to help enhance teaching and learning in the school especially when it comes to the teaching of science practicals.
