Law expert and private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu has disclosed the police want to prosecute and charge the law students but has cautioned them to let sleeping dogs lie.

“I hear the police want to prosecute them, which we think it's wrong,” he said on Joy FM’s news analysis programme, Newsfile on Saturday.

At least nine protesters have been arrested in a protest demanding reforms in Ghana’s legal education system.

The arrest included three members of the Economic Fighters’ League which joined the law students protest in solidarity. Two conveners were also bundled into police vehicles.

Police fired rubber bullets and showered protesters with water from their cannons. 

This has been condemned by a lot of people as well as civil society groups.

Commenting on the development, Mr Kpebu told Samson Lardy Anyenini that the police have “made some mistakes and they should just eat the humble pie and let this matter die.”

He advised the police not to go ahead with the matter because the students could go to Commissioner on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for unjust treatment.

“Otherwise from what it is the students are thinking of going to CHARAJ to lodge a complain and for them, they have video evidence of brutalities,” he warned.

Following the police brutalities meted out to them, the Students’ Representative Council of the Ghana School of Law on Monday petitioned the CHRAJ to probe the matter.
