The government is yet to formally adopt the revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Primary Six developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

NaCCA in July presented the proposed revised basic school curriculum to the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, for further consideration and input from the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 73rd anniversary of Great Apam Senior High School in the Central Region, Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu said the proposed curriculum was currently under review by the GES.

He explained that after the GES completes its review, the proposal would be submitted to Cabinet for approval before being formally adopted by the Ministry of Education and implemented through relevant education agencies, including the GES and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector.

The Minister said the review was aimed at repositioning basic education to better prepare Ghanaian children for the demands of the modern world and make them globally competitive.

“We are repositioning the curriculum for learners from KG to Primary Six, with emphasis on moral values. Classroom learning alone is not enough. Problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical skills and character building will be central to the curriculum.

Mr Iddrisu said the revised curriculum would place greater emphasis on emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), electronic and digital learning, as well as moral and values education.

“I am happy to note that, under President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, we will introduce Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, as well as electronics and digital learning, at the basic foundation level.”

According to him, integrating these areas into the basic education curriculum would equip young learners with the knowledge, skills, creativity, critical-thinking abilities and values needed to thrive in the 21st-century economy.

Apam SHS to be upgraded from category B to A

Meanwhile, the Minister for Education has announced plans to upgrade Great Apam Senior High School from a Category B to a Category A school as part of the government’s broader efforts to expand access to quality secondary education.

Mr Iddrisu said the school would benefit from infrastructure expansion, renovation and other development interventions under the Transformative Secondary Education for Access, Results and Relevance for Jobs (STARR-J) project.

He explained that the government would also work towards completing abandoned GETFund projects at the school to provide the necessary infrastructure and facilities to support effective teaching and learning.

In addition, the Minister announced plans to provide a school bus to Great Apam Senior High School to support the institution’s transportation needs.

He said the interventions formed part of the government’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure in selected Senior High Schools, increase access to secondary education and create conducive learning environments for students across the country.

The STARR-J project is expected to contribute significantly to the expansion and improvement of secondary education infrastructure, enhance learning outcomes and create greater opportunities for young people.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that schools receive the infrastructure, resources and support required to provide quality education and prepare Ghanaian youth for the future.
