Students of Kumasi Technical University (KTU) say government has refused to treat them like other public universities after their conversion from polytechnic.
Treasurer of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Ibrahim Huzaif Badar said government’s refusal to satisfy the working conditions of lecturers has affected academic work.
“Our semester is too short for academic work, yet three weeks have gone wasted. The bad news is that we just returned from the break and this strike issue came.
“Some students have not even bought their lecture notes so they can’t even learn on their own,” he explained.
The student’s grievances follow a three-week strike embarked upon by the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) over conditions of service following the conversion of Polytechnics to Technical Universities.
Together with Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), they declared a sit-down strike on Tuesday.Both teacher associations say that until government meets their demand, Technical University students will still remain out of class.Mr Badar believes students will be the bigger losers.The students are therefore appealing to government to quickly resolve issues with their lecturers and other staff for academic work to resume.
“We want to go back to the lecture halls,” he emphasised.
