Left-wing political movement, Economic Fighters’ League (EFL) is mobilising support for displaced victims of Upper East Region’s deadly floods.
Rebuilding efforts have been slow for the more than 1,200 displaced persons after rainfall during the first 12 days of October forced them out of their homes.
The Red Cross in the Upper East region has described the crisis as “pathetic and dire.”

Entire families grapple with basic needs, some beg for food while others have had to sleep on the bare floor in a council building, Joy News has reported.
In the region where agrarian activities are the main source of livelihoods, the floods destroyed some 850 hectares of farmlands in nine areas triggering a daily struggle for food and sympathy.
While some relief items have come in from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and from the Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who also donated GHS50,000 to the victims, shelter remains a huge concern.
Through crowdfunding, the EFL aims to build 10 homes in a region where more than 1,200 people are displaced. It has been asking for contributions of any amount to help the cause.
According to the group’s social media page, it would cost GHS8,000 to build a decent home for the affected.
The Economic Fighters’ League hopes to raise the money to help the victims.
Leading the campaign to raise awareness to the plight of the victims is Abeku Adams, a member of the group who was nominated in the recent MTN Heroes of Change, an award scheme that recognises selfless service.
Abeku Adams using the power of social media helped stock an otherwise empty library in a Senior High School in the Ekumfi district of the Central Region. He has now turned attention to the humanitarian crisis north of the country.
On Facebook, the EFL publishes and updates its list of contributions received from donors through mobile money. It is also asking for building materials like cement and roofing sheets.
The political movement said it places emphasis on community service and humanitarian services. It has been organising blood donation exercises for the Korle-Bu Blood Bank.

The EFL with its Nkrumahist leanings joined law students in its campaign for legal education reforms. It also played a role in a movement that compelled Parliament to shelve a plan to build a new chamber and has been campaigning against the introduction of Genetically Modified Foods.
The EFL has called for the replacement of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution with one that, among other things, allow for proportional representation system of elections.
