A basic school teacher in the Northern region of Ghana has invented what he calls African numerals.
Amadu Hudu believes his numerals can facilitate effective teaching and learning of numeracy in the country’s schools.
A 25-page book containing Mr Hudu’s numerals said to have been certified by the Ghana Education Service, was launched on Friday, September 5, 2014.
The comb-like numerals, the author says, are “to help preserve and promote our Ghanaian culture, especially our languages.”
He said Africans, and Ghanaians for that matter struggle with numeracy because the numerals bear no resemblance with the traditions, culture and language of the people.
The Ghanaian numerals, he believes, are in synch with “our speech, our written characters, numerals, symbols, our non-verbal gestures and our expressions.”
In the book, Mr. Hudu explained how the numerals work.
He made a number of mathematical calculations to demonstrate the workability of the numerals.
