The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC's) parliamentary candidate for Efutu constituency, James Kofi Annan has denied the accusation of insulting the Police commander for the area.
His comments come after he was arrested and charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.
According to the police, Mr Annan walked in on a voter challenge committee meeting chaired by the Police Commander, Samuel Asiedu Okanta, and demanded to know why the committee has started proceedings without an NDC representative.
Police say he subsequently used abusive words, to wit “you are the chairman of this committee and so what. You are the reason we are not enjoying peace in Winneba.”
But, in an interview on Joy FM’s NewsNite Tuesday, the parliamentary candidate said contrary he has been accused of, he only went to the meeting to step in for the representative who was running late.
He then asked, “but assuming without admitting, that I used those words, is that supposed to be a criminal misconduct? So now we can’t have a voice? We can’t express ourselves?”
Mr Annan further accused the Police Commander of bias.
According to him, the Commander in all his actions since the voter’s registration exercise begun proves that he is against the NDC party.
“Not long ago, I called the district Election office and complained that the NDC will like to write a petition to the Electoral Commission and ask that the chairman of the challenge committee be changed because he has shown beyond all doubt that he is partial.
“But we were informed the committee was set up by law therefore, the EC cannot change the chairman,” he recounted.
Speaking more on his charges, Mr Annan said he is yet to consult his legal advisors to prepare for the case which has been adjourned to Friday, July 28.
He also pledged to corporate and obey all the judicial proceedings and urged members of his party to remain calm.
