The leadership of Parliament has directed MPs to restrict their movements at night following the killing of their colleague Ekow Quansah Hayford.

NPP MP for Ayensuano Samuel Aye Paye, who disclosed this to JoyNews, said the murder of their colleague has “put fear” in them.

Speaking to JoyNews' Joseph Opoku Gakpo, the MP said, “I think it is important to look at the security of MPs again, other than that a time will come no one will be interested to be in Parliament.”

Mr Paye stated that the decision of the shooter to kill Mr Hayford after he identified himself as an MP shows all politicians are at risk.

This, he explained, could affect their work and responsibilities.

The Mfantseman MP was reported dead on October 9 after he was shot on the Abeadze Dominase – Abeadze Duadzi – Mankessim Road on his return from a campaign trip.

He is said to have been attacked at about 1 am Friday morning by 6 armed highway robbers.

According to an eyewitness report, while the robbery was ongoing, the MP identified himself.

This allegedly infuriated the robbers who blamed him for the problems being faced by people in the country.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee Benard Ahiafor said the killing of the MP shows Ghana is facing a security breakdown.

"We live in a country where hoodlums can go into the office of a CEO and attack him, they can go to court and openly attack a judge. Look at how JB Danquah and Professor Benneh was killed and now it is Ekow."

He stated that this issue of insecurity has to be dealt with.

However, Mr Ahiafor is not the only member of Parliament advocating for better security for MPs.

Minority leader in Parliament also called for the elevation of protection of the personal security of MPs adding that it would help ensure they are adequately protected.
